Independence, and where the reporting stops

Nothing has ever been paid for

No place described in this journal has ever paid to be described.

What does not exist here, in full: affiliate arrangements, commission, sponsored reports, advertorial, paid placement, gifted nights, comped meals, supplied equipment, arranged access. No advertising runs on the site.

Every trip was paid for out of the working funds of Delyavia Imprint LLC, which is a New York company owning one title and no other business.

A change to any of that gets written here and on the About page, and every report it touches receives a plain statement above its opening paragraph rather than a footnote nobody reads. Anything advertising would be labelled as such from its first day on the site, and the Cookie Policy would be rewritten in advance of a single item arriving in anybody's browser.

Where the journal stops

Delyavia publishes. It does not sell travel, arrange travel, resell it, compare prices for it, or act for anybody who does.

There is no basket on any page here, no checkout stage, no price and no way to pay. No part of a journey is assembled on a reader's behalf, and no reader has ever been passed to a third party, for the simple reason that no third party is involved in any of this.

No carrier, hotel group, resort, rental firm, tour operator or reservation service holds a relationship with this title, and no sentence here was written because somebody requested it.

Winter detail goes stale faster than most

Every report covers a small number of specific days in one place and prints its publication date for that reason.

Things that change between one winter and the next: a park gate acquires a padlock, a side road leaves the maintained list, a stairway shuts for repair and never reopens, a permit requirement appears, a car park stops being ploughed. Everything printed here was checked to a reasonable standard on the day, and nothing is watched afterwards.

Anything you plan to act on deserves a current source: the park authority, the highway department, the county, this morning's forecast. A correction reaching the desk gets printed above the report, dated.

Not advice, in several senses

Nothing here is legal, financial, medical, insurance, immigration or tax advice and none of it should be read that way.

Where a report touches permits or access rules it records what applied to one person on one trip. Those turn on residency, purpose and date and they change.

More importantly for this particular journal: nothing here is safety instruction. Notes about clothing, footing, ice and cold describe how one person works and they do not replace posted warnings, closures, highway advice, a ranger, a lifeguard or a current forecast. Lake ice in particular kills people every winter across this region, and no paragraph on a website is a substitute for local warnings or for staying off it entirely.

The photographs

Each frame here was taken on the trip its report covers, by the person who wrote the report. Not a single one came out of a stock library and not a single one was bought or licensed in.

Exposure, contrast and colour are worked on, which is true of any photograph published anywhere. What does not happen: combining several moments into one frame, moving a scene somewhere it was not, adding an element, or taking one out.

Ownership rests with Delyavia Imprint LLC and no open licence applies to any of them. Clause 4 of the Terms of Use draws the line.

No promise about your version

Nothing here undertakes that a trip taken after reading a report will resemble the one described.

Cold season conditions are the least repeatable thing in travel. A week that produced an ice shove produces nothing the following year, rime needs a particular freeze, and deep snow settles within days of falling. The reports say so repeatedly rather than implying that a few days stand for a permanent state.

Equipment

Where a note describes boots, gloves, a flask or a bag, it describes a category and a property rather than a product, and it does so on purpose.

No manufacturer has supplied anything, paid anything, or been told in advance that a type of equipment would appear. Unrequested equipment sent to this desk is not reviewed and creates no obligation of any kind.

Others named

Nothing on this site links outward and nothing is embedded from elsewhere.

A town, a park, a highway authority or a public body named in a report is named as a fact of the account. That is not an endorsement, none of them is involved with this journal, and none answers for anything it says.

Errors

One person writes, photographs and edits all of it, so errors get through. A factual error is corrected at the top of the report with a date on it, never quietly.
